"Press freedom: under threat?" (English)
Ferial Haffajee is the current editor of City Press and former editor of the Mail & Guardian.
Ms Haffajee started her journalistic career as an intern at the Weekly Mail. She then worked for the SABC as radio producer and television reporter.
She shot to national fame as one of the reporters on a panel that interviewed Nelson Mandela in his first television discussion soon after his release from 27 years of imprisonment.
Ms Haffajee joined the Financial Mail as senior editor, rising to managing editor, before returning to the Mail and Guardian as associate editor.
She was appointed editor of the Mail & Guardian in February 2004, two years after control of the paper was acquired by Trevor Ncube. In 2005 the publication became one of the few local newspapers interdicted from publishing specific stories. In 2006 the paper was again interdicted, and Haffajee threatened, after republishing controversial cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammed
The newspaper's reputation for investigative journalism remained the main focus area under Haffajee's leadership at the Mail & Guardian. She started her new career at City Press on 1 July this year.
Ms Haffajee is eminently suited to speak about the topic Press freedom: under threat?
